Summary: Operates and maintains equipment by performing preventative maintenance i.e. lubricating, cleaning, adding gear lubricants, changing bucket cables and document all activities performed daily. The Operator performs the following, but not limited to, duties on the following equipment: Operates D-9 Dozer, Front-end loader tractors, Backhoe, Dump truck, Cherry picker, Moveable Crane, etc. that is used in operations involving rail repair, new rail track laying, crossing and bridge repair. Follows TGS and customer (for whom we work) procedures, policies, safety rules, security rules and federal/state laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Works independently without or little supervision, working to meet productivity goals
  • Cross train in the operation of any equipment as required by TGS, Inc.
  • Perform jobs in production, housekeeping, maintenance, clerical, operation, labor, etc. that might be assigned by supervision. This includes but not limited the ability to work at any of the TGS, Inc. locations.
  • Assist Foreman (supervision) by setting an example and leading other employees in performing the daily work duties as directed by Supervision.
  • Observes crane load hookup and determines safety of load.
  • Manipulates or depresses equipment controls such as pedals, levers, and buttons, to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and hoisting mechanism.
  • Performs daily lubrication and preventive maintenance, keeping records of all work performed.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and minor repairs.
  • Inspects equipment for defective parts, documents daily inspections and notifies supervisor of defects or malfunctions.
  • Maintains equipment by performing preventive maintenance, i.e.: lubricating, cleaning, adding gear lubricants, changing filters and documents all activity performed.
  • Knows how to fasten attachments, hoses, power takeoff, mechanical linkage, to dozers, loaders, tractor trailer, cherry picker, etc.
  • Operates D-9 bulldozer in successive passes over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified grade.
  • Must maintain current valid State commercial driver’s license to perform tractor-trailer or dump truck driving services/capabilities.
  • Has in possession valid heavy equipment operator’s certificate, as required by TGS and/or customer, for the heavy equipment that is being operated.
  • Performs other routine duties as may be assigned.
  • Cleans and performs housekeeping duties of work area.
  • As directed performs activities of co-workers.
  • Must be willing to work shift and/or overtime hours during the week and/or weekends as dictated by operations.
  • In order to appropriately perform the essential duties of this job, regular work attendance is required.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s driver license and have the willingness to use personal and/or company vehicle in the course of employment. Must posses Safety training/certification as required by customers to work in their facilities and as required by TGS at all TGS locations. Must possess heavy equipment operator’s certification for equipment being operated and when required.
