Summary:    The Locomotive Engineer must be able to safely operate a diesel-electric locomotive and train, complying with all applicable rules and regulations, interpreting train orders, train signals, and railroad rules and regulations, to transport freight by performing the following duties.
 
 
Typical Duties:
Typical duties will include but not be limited to the preparation and/or modification of the following:
 
  •   Interprets train orders, train signals, and railroad rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety regulations and time schedule.
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
 
  • Inspects locomotive and performs running maintenance before run to verify specified and/or add fuel, sand, water, oil, other supplies, adjusting brakes, changing brake shoes.
 
  • Makes repairs or adjustments to rail car equipment in order to permit movement.
 
  • Adjust heavy couplers using lifting and shoving movements.
 
  • Unassisted replaces defective knuckles in couplers, requiring the lifting and placement of an 85-pound knuckle.
 
  • Performs required safety inspections of locomotive requiring a physical examination of all locomotive operating parts.
 
  • Receives starting signal from Conductor, Switchman or Brakeman and moves controls, such as throttle and airbrakes, to operate locomotive.
 
  • Interprets train orders, train signals, and railroad rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety regulations and time schedule.
 
  • Confers with Conductor, Switchman or Brakeman via radiophone to issue or receive information or instructions concerning stops, delays, or conflicting movements.
 
  • Maintains lookout to detect obstructions on track or right-of-way and makes report of obstructions found.
 
  • Inspects locomotive after run to detect damaged or defective equipment.
 
  • Prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays

Skills and Special Requirements:
 
  • Requires a high degree of professional integrity, ethics, and confidentiality.
  • Locomotive Engineer certificate issued in accordance with 49 CFR, Part 240.
  • Knowledge of  transmission, broadcasting, switching, control, and operation of telecommunications systems.
  • Knowledge of FRA regulations.
  • Must possess Safety training/certification as required by customers to work in their facilities and as required by TGS at all TGS locations.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to make quick and sound judgments and manual dexterity.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be able to pass the Hearing and vision test.

  • Background screening including previous employment, education, criminal history and driving record verification.
 
Education and/or Experience:    
Locomotive Engineer certificate issued in accordance with 49 CFR, Part 240.
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
